True-breeding Line

Introduction

A true-breeding line is one that, after continuous self-pollination over several generations, shows the stable inheritance and expression of a trait — every generation looks the same.

Core concept

How it is made: plants are self-pollinated generation after generation until they become homozygous for the trait. Mendel selected 14 true-breeding pea plant varieties as pairs that were similar except for one character with contrasting traits (e.g. tall/dwarf, round/wrinkled seed). Why it matters: crossing two true-breeding parents gives a uniform F1, so any segregation seen in F2 must come from the hybrid, not from mixed parents. A true-breeding plant is homozygous (TT or tt) and, when selfed, produces offspring like itself.

Go deeper

Without true-breeding parents, Mendel's 3:1 and 9:3:3:1 ratios would be impossible to interpret, because the parents themselves would already be segregating. Pea was ideal: naturally self-pollinating, easy to cross artificially, with many clear contrasting traits.

From Class 10

If you plant seeds from a pure variety of rice year after year and every plant looks the same, that variety is true-breeding for those traits.
