Sex Determination Mechanisms
Introduction
Sex determination mechanisms are the genetic or environmental systems by which sex is established in an organism. Major genetic mechanisms include XX/XY (humans, Drosophila), ZW/ZZ (birds, butterflies), XO/XX (grasshoppers), and haplodiploidy (Hymenoptera); environmental sex determination occurs in some reptiles and fish.
Core concept
XX/XY system (humans, Drosophila, many mammals): Females: XX (homogametic — one type of gamete: X). Males: XY (heterogametic — two types: X or Y). Males determine sex of offspring: 50% X-bearing sperm → XX (female), 50% Y-bearing → XY (male). Human Y chromosome: carries SRY gene (Sex-determining Region of Y) → triggers testes development → testosterone → male phenotype. Without SRY → default female development. ZW/ZZ system (birds, some reptiles, butterflies): Females: ZW (heterogametic). Males: ZZ (homogametic). Females determine sex. XO system (grasshoppers, some insects): Females: XX. Males: XO (one X, no Y). Males produce X and no-X gametes in equal proportion. Haplodiploidy (bees, ants, wasps — Hymenoptera): Females: diploid (2n, from fertilized eggs). Males: haploid (n, from unfertilized eggs). Environmental sex determination (ESD): Temperature-dependent (many reptiles, some fish): warm = female or male depending on species. No sex chromosomes. Crocodilians: >34°C → male; 30-34°C → female. Turtles: opposite in some species.
Go deeper
Human sex determination molecular detail: SRY gene on Y chromosome → SOX9 → Sertoli cells → AMH (anti-Müllerian hormone) → regression of Müllerian ducts. Leydig cells → testosterone → Wolffian duct development (epididymis, vas deferens, seminal vesicles). Absence of SRY → ovarian development (Wnt4 pathway) → Müllerian ducts → uterus, fallopian tubes. Disorders of sex development (DSDs) occur from mutations in SRY, SOX9, SF1, WT1, etc.
From Class 10
In humans, sex is determined by sex chromosomes: XX = female, XY = male. But other organisms use different systems — some use ZW chromosomes, some use chromosome number, and some use the environment.
