Haplodiploid Sex Determination

Introduction
Haplodiploidy (arrhenotoky) is a sex determination system found in Hymenoptera (bees, wasps, ants) where females are diploid (2n, from fertilized eggs) and males are haploid (n, from unfertilized eggs by parthenogenesis).
Core concept
Hymenoptera sex determination: Females (workers and queens): diploid (2n). Develop from fertilized eggs. Normal meiosis. Males (drones): haploid (n). Develop from unfertilized eggs (arrhenotoky/parthenogenesis). No meiosis needed — mitosis produces sperm directly. Queen determines sex: lays fertilized eggs (→ female) or unfertilized eggs (→ male). Sperm stored in spermatheca — queen releases sperm selectively. Worker bees: fertilized eggs + worker food (royal jelly only in early stages). Queens: fertilized eggs + royal jelly throughout development (dietary determination within female). Males (drones): haploid — only purpose is mating. Genetic consequences: sons get all genes from mother only (haploid → no father's genes). Sisters share 3/4 of genes (vs 1/2 in diploid organisms) — increases kin selection → worker altruism (Hamilton's kin selection theory). CSD (complementary sex determination) gene: in some Hymenoptera, heterozygous at CSD → female; hemizygous (haploid) → male; homozygous diploid → infertile male (diploid male — problem in inbred populations).
Go deeper
Evolutionary consequence of haplodiploidy — Hamilton's kin selection: sisters in a haplodiploid colony share 3/4 of genes (vs 1/2 normally). Workers are reproductively closer to their sisters than to their own offspring. This makes worker altruism (raising sisters) evolutionarily favourable (kin selection, r = 3/4 > 1/2). Explains evolution of eusociality (sterile worker castes) in Hymenoptera. Hamilton's rule: altruism evolves when rb > c (r = relatedness, b = benefit to recipient, c = cost to actor). High r (3/4) in haplodiploid systems → lowered threshold for altruism.
From Class 10
In bees and ants, sex is determined not by sex chromosomes but by chromosome number. Females develop from fertilized eggs (diploid), while males develop from unfertilized eggs (haploid).
