Analogous Organs

Introduction

Analogous organs perform similar functions but are not anatomically similar and have different origins. They are the result of convergent evolution.

Core concept

Examples (NCERT): wings of butterfly and of birds; eyes of octopus and of mammals; flippers of penguins and dolphins; sweet potato (root modification) and potato (stem modification). Similar habitats have resulted in the selection of similar adaptive features in different groups of organisms, but toward the same function.

Go deeper

Analogy shows that the same environmental problem (flying, swimming, storing food underground) can be solved by unrelated organisms in similar ways.

From Class 10

A bird's wing and a butterfly's wing both help in flying, but they are built from completely different parts — that is analogy.
