Human Evolution

Introduction

Human evolution traces the line from ape-like ancestors about 15 million years ago to modern Homo sapiens, with brains getting larger and tool use developing.

Core concept

Sequence (NCERT): Dryopithecus and Ramapithecus (about 15 mya) — Dryopithecus more ape-like, Ramapithecus more man-like, both hairy and walked like gorillas. Australopithecines (about 2 mya, East African grasslands) — hunted with stone weapons, ate fruit. Homo habilis — first human-like being, brain 650-800 cc, probably did not eat meat. Homo erectus (about 1.5 mya, fossils in Java in 1891) — brain about 900 cc, probably ate meat. Neanderthal man (1,00,000-40,000 years ago, near east and central Asian countries) — brain 1400 cc, used hides to protect the body, buried the dead. Homo sapiens arose in Africa and moved across continents; modern Homo sapiens arose during the ice age between 75,000-10,000 years ago. Prehistoric cave art about 18,000 years ago; agriculture about 10,000 years ago.

Go deeper

Brain size increased with time: H. habilis (650-800 cc) < H. erectus (900 cc) < Neanderthal (1400 cc). Homo sapiens has a brain of about 1350 cc.

From Class 10

Humans did not descend from today's chimpanzees; both share a common ancestor that lived millions of years ago.
