Adaptive Radiation
Introduction
Adaptive radiation is the evolution of different species in a given geographical area starting from a point and literally radiating to other areas of geography (habitats).
Core concept
Examples (NCERT): Darwin's finches of the Galapagos Islands — from the original seed-eating finches, many varieties with altered beaks evolved (insectivorous, vegetarian). Australian marsupials — many different marsupials (each different from the others) evolved from an ancestral stock within the Australian island continent: e.g. marsupial mole, numbat (anteater), sugar glider, Tasmanian wolf, bandicoot, kangaroo, koala, wombat. When more than one adaptive radiation appears to have occurred in an isolated geographical area, it can be called convergent evolution — placental mammals in Australia show convergent evolution with marsupials (e.g. placental wolf and Tasmanian wolf).
Go deeper
Adaptive radiation is divergent: one ancestral form gives rise to many forms adapted to different niches.
From Class 10
Imagine one bird species reaching a group of islands and, over time, giving rise to many species, each with a beak suited to a different food. That spreading out is adaptive radiation.
