Selectable Marker
Introduction
A selectable marker is a gene that helps identify and eliminate non-transformants and selectively permits the growth of transformants.
Core concept
Transformation is a procedure through which a piece of DNA is introduced into a host bacterium. Normally, genes encoding resistance to antibiotics such as ampicillin, chloramphenicol, tetracycline or kanamycin are useful selectable markers for E. coli. Normal E. coli cells do not carry resistance to any of these antibiotics; transformed cells carrying the plasmid with the resistance gene survive on medium containing the antibiotic. Alternative markers: the gene for beta-galactosidase used in blue-white selection.
Go deeper
Without a marker, there is no easy way to find the few cells that actually took up the recombinant DNA among millions that did not.
From Class 10
A selectable marker is like a name tag on cells that took the new DNA, so they can be picked out from the rest.
