Genetic Engineering
Introduction
Genetic engineering is the set of techniques to alter the chemistry of genetic material (DNA and RNA), to introduce it into host organisms and thus change the phenotype of the host organism.
Core concept
Basic steps of recombinant DNA technology (NCERT): (1) identification of DNA with desirable genes; (2) introduction of the identified DNA into the host; (3) maintenance of introduced DNA in the host and transfer of the DNA to its progeny. Isolation of DNA → cutting at specific locations with restriction enzymes → amplification of the gene of interest using PCR → ligation of the DNA fragment into a vector (DNA ligase) → insertion of recombinant DNA into the host cell/organism → obtaining the foreign gene product. The first recombinant DNA was constructed by Stanley Cohen and Herbert Boyer in 1972, by linking a gene encoding antibiotic resistance with a native plasmid of Salmonella typhimurium.
Go deeper
Two core techniques enabled modern biotechnology: genetic engineering and bioprocess engineering (maintenance of sterile ambience to enable growth of only the desired microbe or eukaryotic cell in large quantities).
From Class 10
Genetic engineering lets scientists take a useful gene from one organism and put it into another, like copying one useful recipe into a different cookbook.
