Hyphae and Mycelium

Introduction

A mushroom is not the fungus — it is the fruiting body. The actual organism is an invisible network of threads running through the soil or decomposing wood: the mycelium. Most of the fungal kingdom is underground, unseen, and overlooked.

Core concept

Hyphae (singular: hypha) are tubular, thread-like filaments with chitin cell walls. Two types:Septate hyphae — cross-walls (septa) divide them into compartments; found in Ascomycetes and BasidiomycetesAseptate (coenocytic) hyphae — no cross-walls; multinucleate continuous cytoplasm; found in Phycomycetes (Mucor, Rhizopus)Mycelium is the mass of branching, interwoven hyphae that forms the vegetative body of the fungus — responsible for nutrient absorption.

Go deeper

Specialised hyphae: rhizoids (anchor to substrate, as in Rhizopus), haustoria (penetrate host cells in parasitic fungi), stolons (horizontal hyphae connecting rhizoid groups). These terms appear in NEET questions on specific fungi.

From Class 10

In Class 10, you saw thread-like structures on mouldy bread without knowing their name. In Class 11, those threads are hyphae — and their collective network is the mycelium. Understanding hyphae and mycelium is understanding the fundamental body plan of Kingdom Fungi.
