Archaebacteria
Introduction
In the 1970s, Carl Woese sequenced ribosomal RNA from hundreds of microorganisms and found that bacteria living in extreme environments — boiling hot springs, hypersaline lakes, oxygen-free swamps — were not really bacteria at all. Their rRNA was as different from true bacteria as from eukaryotes. He called them Archaea. They are among the oldest forms of life on Earth, thriving where nothing else can.
Core concept
Archaebacteria: prokaryotes in extreme environments; no peptidoglycan cell wall; different rRNA sequences from Eubacteria.Three types — all NEET-tested:Halophiles — extremely salty environments (salt lakes); e.g., HalobacteriumThermoacidophiles — hot, acidic environments (hot springs); e.g., SulfolobusMethanogens — anaerobic; produce methane; gut of ruminants; e.g., MethanobacteriumMethanogens in cattle gut are responsible for much of biologically produced methane — a greenhouse gas.
Go deeper
Archaebacteria cell membranes contain branched chain lipids (isoprenoid-based) linked by ether bonds — unlike ester-linked straight-chain fatty acids in all other life. This unusual membrane chemistry allows survival in extreme conditions.Methanogens produce biogas (methane), used as fuel. NEET sometimes asks which organisms produce methane/biogas.
From Class 10
In Class 10, bacteria were presented as a single group. In Class 11, Kingdom Monera contains two fundamentally different types — Eubacteria and Archaebacteria — which differ so profoundly at the molecular level that some biologists now place them in separate domains.
