Kingdom Protista
Introduction
When Whittaker proposed his five-kingdom system, he needed somewhere to put organisms that were clearly eukaryotic but did not fit Plantae, Fungi, or Animalia. Diatoms that build glass houses. Slime moulds that move like animals then sporulate like fungi. Euglena that photosynthesises in sunlight and absorbs nutrients in the dark. He put them all in Protista — not because they were similar, but because they were different from everything else in the same ways.
Core concept
Kingdom Protista: all unicellular eukaryotes. Five major groups:Chrysophytes — diatoms and golden algae; photosynthetic; diatoms have silica cell wallsDinoflagellates — mostly marine, photosynthetic; two flagella; red tides (Gonyaulax)Euglenoids — no cell wall, flexible pellicle; autotrophic in light, heterotrophic in dark (Euglena)Slime moulds — saprotrophic; form plasmodium (non-cellular mass); produce sporesProtozoans — heterotrophic; four locomotor subgroups
Go deeper
Red tide — blooms of dinoflagellates like Gonyaulax turn seawater red and produce toxins that accumulate in shellfish. Directly NEET-tested.Slime moulds aggregate into a multicellular slug-like structure under stress. Their spores have cell walls — unusual for protists — dispersed by wind.
From Class 10
In Class 10, organisms that were neither plant nor animal went into a vague middle category. In Class 11, that middle category has a name: Kingdom Protista — unicellular eukaryotes with a true nucleus but no multicellular body plan like plants or animals.
