Euglenoids and Pellicle
Introduction
Euglena refuses to be classified. It has chloroplasts like a plant. It moves with a flagellum like an animal. It has no cell wall — just a flexible protein pellicle. In light it photosynthesises; in dark it absorbs organic molecules. For centuries, botanists called it a plant, zoologists called it an animal. Modern biology calls it a euglenoid and moves on.
Core concept
Euglenoids: no cell wall; flexible pellicle (interlocking protein strips inside the cell membrane). Key features:Two flagella — one short, one long (used for locomotion)Eyespot (stigma) — photosensitive organelle; orients organism toward light (phototaxis)Chloroplasts present — autotrophic in light, heterotrophic in darkFood stored as paramylon (unique polysaccharide)Freshwater, especially stagnant organic-rich waterExample: Euglena viridis
Go deeper
Mixotrophic behaviour — autotrophic in light, heterotrophic in dark — is why Euglena blurs the plant-animal boundary and why Whittaker placed it in neither kingdom.Paramylon is distinct from starch (plants), glycogen (animals/fungi), and laminarin (brown algae). NEET occasionally asks which storage product is unique to euglenoids.
From Class 10
In Class 10, you may have seen Euglena — a single-celled organism with a flagellum, eyespot, and chloroplasts — without knowing which kingdom it belonged to. In Class 11, Euglena finds its home in Kingdom Protista under euglenoids, and its unusual dual nutrition becomes a central teaching point.
