Five Kingdom Classification
Introduction
In 1866, Ernst Haeckel proposed a third kingdom — Protista — to accommodate the organisms that were clearly neither plant nor animal. But bacteria were still lumped with plants. Fungi were still lumped with plants. The system creaked under the weight of its own exceptions. In 1969, R.H. Whittaker proposed a clean break: five kingdoms, based on four criteria. It was not perfect. But it was a rational system, and it held for decades.
Core concept
The five-kingdom classification was proposed by R.H. Whittaker in 1969. The five kingdoms are:Monera — prokaryotes; no nuclear envelope; e.g., bacteria, cyanobacteriaProtista — unicellular eukaryotes; e.g., Amoeba, Paramecium, diatomsFungi — eukaryotic; heterotrophic by absorption; cell wall of chitin; e.g., Mucor, mushrooms, yeastPlantae — eukaryotic; autotrophic by photosynthesis; cell wall of celluloseAnimalia — eukaryotic; heterotrophic by ingestion; no cell wallThe four criteria Whittaker used:Cell structure (prokaryote vs. eukaryote)Body organisation (unicellular vs. multicellular)Mode of nutrition (autotrophic vs. heterotrophic)Mode of reproduction
Go deeper
The two-kingdom system (Plantae and Animalia, proposed by Linnaeus) failed because it had no place for bacteria, fungi, or unicellular organisms. Haeckel s three-kingdom system (adding Protista) improved on it but still grouped prokaryotes with eukaryotes. Copeland s four-kingdom system separated prokaryotes into Monera. Whittaker s five-kingdom system separated fungi from plants — the key advance, since fungi are heterotrophic absorbers, not autotrophs. The six-kingdom system (adding Archaebacteria as separate from Eubacteria within Monera) is sometimes mentioned in NEET contexts. Know that it exists.
From Class 10
In Class 10, you studied the five kingdoms as a given — Monera, Protista, Fungi, Plantae, Animalia. You placed organisms into them following the textbook. In Class 11, you study the five-kingdom system as a scientific proposal — who proposed it, on what criteria, what it improved on, and where it still falls short.
