Dikaryophase

Introduction

In most sexually reproducing organisms, the fusion of two gametes is immediate and complete — two haploid nuclei become one diploid nucleus in an instant. But in Ascomycetes and Basidiomycetes, that fusion is delayed. The two nuclei from different mating types enter the same cell and coexist, dividing in parallel, for an extended period before finally fusing. This strange, extended state of co-existence is the dikaryophase — and it is one of the most unusual reproductive strategies in biology.

Core concept

The dikaryophase (also called the dikaryotic stage or dikaryon) is a stage in the life cycle of certain fungi — specifically Ascomycetes and Basidiomycetes — in which cells contain two haploid nuclei (n + n) that remain unfused. The sequence in fungal sexual reproduction:Plasmogamy — fusion of cytoplasm from two compatible hyphae; two nuclei enter the same cellDikaryophase — the two nuclei (n + n) coexist and divide without fusing; this stage can be prolongedKaryogamy — the two haploid nuclei fuse to form a diploid nucleus (2n)Meiosis — the diploid nucleus undergoes meiosis to produce haploid sporesThe dikaryophase is prominent in Ascomycetes and Basidiomycetes and is largely absent in Phycomycetes.

Go deeper

The dikaryotic mycelium (n + n) behaves in some ways like a diploid organism — it has genetic input from both parents — but it is not diploid. This makes it genetically distinct from both the haploid (n) mycelium that preceded plasmogamy and the diploid (2n) cell that forms after karyogamy. The prolonged dikaryophase in Basidiomycetes (which can last for months or years) is thought to allow genetic variation to be maintained without committing to a full diploid state.

From Class 10

In Class 10, you learned basic cell division — mitosis and meiosis — and the concept of haploid (n) and diploid (2n) cells. In Class 11, you encounter something in between: the dikaryophase, a stage unique to certain fungi where cells contain two unfused haploid nuclei. It is neither haploid nor diploid in the usual sense — it is n+n.
