Introduction

Fungi are the great recyclers of the living world. Without them, dead organic matter would accumulate indefinitely and the nutrients locked within it would never return to circulation. But fungi are not a single thing — they are a kingdom of extraordinary diversity. The mushroom on your plate, the mould on your bread, the yeast in your dough, and the rust on a wheat crop are all fungi, and they belong to very different classes with very different biologies.

Core concept

Kingdom Fungi is divided into five major classes based on the type of spores produced and the nature of the mycelium:Phycomycetes — aquatic or damp habitats; aseptate coenocytic hyphae; sexual spores = zygospores; e.g., Mucor, RhizopusAscomycetes (sac fungi) — septate hyphae; sexual spores = ascospores inside asci; e.g., Penicillium, Aspergillus, Neurospora, yeastBasidiomycetes (club fungi) — septate hyphae; sexual spores = basidiospores on basidia; e.g., mushrooms, puffballs, Agaricus, smuts, rustsDeuteromycetes (imperfect fungi) — only asexual reproduction known; e.g., Alternaria, Colletotrichum, TrichodermaThe dikaryophase (n+n stage) is prominent in Ascomycetes and Basidiomycetes.

Go deeper

Deuteromycetes are called imperfect fungi not because they are incomplete organisms, but because their sexual stage has never been observed. When a sexual stage is eventually discovered, they are reclassified into one of the other classes. This is an important conceptual point — the classification is based on the state of our knowledge, not on the organism s actual biology.Neurospora — used extensively in genetics research — is an Ascomycete. Penicillium produces penicillin and is also an Ascomycete. These applied examples appear in NEET.

From Class 10

In Class 10, you may have encountered fungi as decomposers — organisms that break down dead matter. You probably knew mushrooms and bread mould as examples. In Class 11, you go inside the kingdom Fungi and find that it is divided into distinct classes, each with its own reproductive structures, hyphal characteristics, and mode of spore formation.
