Frog Excretory System
தவளை கழிவுநீக்க மண்டலம்
Do not confuse the frog's excretory system with human physiology. While humans are ureotelic, the frog's transition from ammonotelic tadpoles to ureotelic adults is a classic evolutionary trap. Master the anatomy or lose marks on basic classification.
The idea
The frog's excretory system comprises a pair of kidneys, ureters, cloaca, and a urinary bladder. Kidneys are compact, dark red, and bean-shaped structures situated posteriorly in the body cavity. They are mesonephric and retroperitoneal. Nitrogenous wastes are carried by ureters to the cloaca and finally excreted out.
Why it matters
It exists to remove toxic nitrogenous metabolic wastes from the blood to prevent internal poisoning.
NEET lens
NEET focuses on the 'ureotelic' nature of adult frogs. Expect questions distinguishing between the mesonephric kidney of the frog and the metanephric kidney of humans. Memorize the sequence: Kidney → Ureter → Cloaca → Urinary Bladder.
Clinical significance
In humans, kidney failure leads to uremia, a toxic accumulation of urea in the blood. Unlike frogs, which use the cloaca for both excretion and reproduction, human renal and reproductive systems are distinct. Failure of the nephron filtration mechanism in either species results in systemic metabolic acidosis.
Introduction
Frog excretory system consists of paired kidneys (mesonephros type), ureters, urinary bladder, and cloaca. Frogs are ureotelic (excrete urea).
Core concept
Kidneys: elongated, dark red, retroperitoneal. Ureters open into cloaca (not directly into bladder). Urinary bladder: attached to cloaca, bilobed. Urine: urea-based (ureotelic). Skin and gills also excrete some ammonia. Malpighian body = glomerulus + Bowman's capsule.
Go deeper
Amphibious lifestyle of frogs: in water, they can excrete more ammonia (ammoniotelic) — water dilutes it. On land, they switch to urea (less toxic, needs less water). This dual excretion capability is adaptive.
From Class 10
Kidneys remove waste products. Frogs have a simpler excretory system than humans but with similar principles.
