Frog Nervous System

NCERT Class 11 · Structural Organisation in Animals · 0 NEET questions

The frog's brain is not a primitive organ; it is the evolutionary blueprint for the human CNS. If you confuse the cranial nerve count between amphibians and mammals, you lose four marks. Precision in anatomy is the difference between a seat in Madras Medical College and a repeat year.

The idea

The frog's nervous system comprises the Central, Peripheral, and Autonomic systems. The brain is housed in a cranium and segmented into the forebrain (olfactory lobes, paired cerebral hemispheres, and unpaired diencephalon), midbrain (optic lobes), and hindbrain (cerebellum and medulla oblongata). The medulla passes through the foramen magnum to continue as the spinal cord within the vertebral column.

Why it matters

It exists to coordinate body functions, process sensory information, and facilitate rapid responses to environmental stimuli.

NEET lens

NEET focuses on the specific subdivisions of the brain. Memorize that the frog's midbrain contains only two optic lobes, unlike the four (corpora quadrigemina) in humans. Expect matching-type questions on the components of the forebrain and hindbrain.

Clinical significance

The medulla oblongata is the control center for involuntary functions like respiration and heart rate. Damage to this region in any vertebrate, including humans, leads to immediate autonomic failure and death. Understanding this structure is fundamental to grasping how brainstem injuries manifest in clinical practice.

Introduction

Frog nervous system consists of central nervous system (brain + spinal cord), peripheral nervous system (cranial + spinal nerves), and autonomic nervous system.

Core concept

Brain regions: forebrain (olfactory lobes, cerebrum), midbrain (optic lobes — largest, vision), hindbrain (cerebellum — small, balance; medulla oblongata — vital functions). 10 pairs of cranial nerves. Spinal cord with spinal nerves. Autonomic: sympathetic + parasympathetic.

Go deeper

Frog's optic lobes are very prominent (good vision). Cerebellum is poorly developed (simple movements). Compare to human: cerebrum is largest (intelligence), cerebellum is prominent (complex movement).

From Class 10

The nervous system coordinates body functions. Frog has a brain, spinal cord, and nerves — a simpler vertebrate model.
