Frog Circulatory System

NCERT Class 11 · Structural Organisation in Animals · 0 NEET questions

Do not mistake the frog's three-chambered heart for an evolutionary failure. It is a highly efficient adaptation for an amphibious life, allowing blood to bypass the lungs during underwater respiration. If you confuse this with the four-chambered heart of mammals, you lose marks.

The idea

The frog's circulatory system is a closed type, comprising the heart, blood vessels, and blood. The heart is a three-chambered muscular organ, protected by a pericardium, consisting of two atria and one ventricle. The ventricle opens into a sac-like conus arteriosus on the ventral side of the heart. This structure ensures the transport of nutrients, gases, and waste products throughout the body.

Why it matters

It exists to transport nutrients, gases, and water to various body tissues to maintain metabolic homeostasis.

NEET lens

NEET examiners frequently test the specific sequence of blood flow through the sinus venosus, atria, ventricle, and conus arteriosus. Memorize the exact order of these chambers. Do not confuse the ventral position of the conus arteriosus with the dorsal structures.

Clinical significance

In humans, a septal defect mimicking a three-chambered heart leads to mixing of oxygenated and deoxygenated blood, causing cyanosis. Understanding the frog's anatomy is the first step in grasping the physiological consequences of incomplete cardiac septation in clinical cardiology.

Introduction

Frog circulatory system is closed with a 3-chambered heart (2 atria + 1 ventricle), double circulation, portal systems, and RBCs that are nucleated and oval-shaped.

Core concept

Heart: 2 atria (right receives deoxygenated blood from body, left receives oxygenated blood from lungs/skin), 1 ventricle (mixes blood somewhat). Conus arteriosus exits to systemic/pulmonary arches. Sinus venosus receives blood from body. RBCs: nucleated, oval, biconvex.

Go deeper

Despite one ventricle, the conus arteriosus has a spiral valve that helps separate oxygenated and deoxygenated blood — not perfect but better than simple mixing. Complete separation evolved in birds/mammals (4-chambered heart).

From Class 10

You know the heart pumps blood. Frog has a 3-chambered heart — different from the 4-chambered heart in humans.
