ELISA Technique
ELISA நுட்பம்
Do not confuse ELISA with PCR. PCR detects genetic material; ELISA detects proteins. If you miss this distinction, you lose 4 marks in the exam.
The idea
ELISA stands for Enzyme-Linked Immuno-sorbent Assay. It relies on the principle of antigen-antibody interaction. The technique detects pathogens by identifying either the specific antigens produced by the pathogen or the antibodies synthesized by the host in response to the infection.
Why it matters
It provides a highly specific and sensitive method to detect immune responses or foreign proteins in biological samples.
NEET lens
NEET focuses on the principle: 'Antigen-Antibody interaction'. Remember, it detects both antigens and antibodies. Do not mark it as 'DNA detection'—that is the trap.
Clinical significance
ELISA is the gold standard for early detection of HIV and other viral infections. Without this precision, asymptomatic carriers would remain undiagnosed, leading to widespread transmission.
Introduction
ELISA (Enzyme Linked Immuno-Sorbent Assay) is a diagnostic technique based on the principle of antigen-antibody interaction.
Core concept
Infection by a pathogen can be detected by the presence of antigens (proteins, glycoproteins, etc.) or by detecting the antibodies synthesised against the pathogen. ELISA is the widely used diagnostic test for AIDS. Along with PCR and recombinant DNA technology, ELISA is one of the molecular diagnosis tools that help early detection of diseases.
Go deeper
Because it can detect either the pathogen's antigens or the body's antibodies, ELISA works even when the pathogen itself is present only in small amounts.
From Class 10
ELISA is a lab test that checks a blood sample for germs or for antibodies the body makes against them.
