Micropropagation
நுண்ணுயிர் பெருக்கம்
Nature takes years to propagate a plant. Biotechnology does it in weeks. If you think plants are just static organisms, you are failing to understand the power of totipotency.
The idea
Micropropagation is the tissue culture technique used to produce thousands of genetically identical plants, known as somaclones. It relies on the principle of cellular totipotency, where any plant cell can regenerate an entire organism. This method allows for the rapid mass production of commercially important plants in a short duration.
Why it matters
It allows for the rapid multiplication of high-quality, disease-free plant varieties that are genetically uniform.
NEET lens
NEET focuses on the term 'somaclones'. Remember: they are genetically identical to the parent plant. Do not confuse this with sexual reproduction; there is no genetic variation here.
Clinical significance
In medicine, this principle mirrors the regenerative potential of human stem cells. If this cellular plasticity fails, tissue repair and organogenesis become impossible, leading to chronic degenerative conditions.
Introduction
Micropropagation is the method of producing thousands of plants through tissue culture in a very short time. The plants produced are genetically identical to the parent — somaclones.
Core concept
Method: an explant (any part of a plant) is grown in a test tube under sterile conditions in special nutrient media (sucrose, inorganic salts, vitamins, amino acids, auxins and cytokinins). This is possible because of totipotency. Many important food plants such as tomato, banana and apple have been produced on a commercial scale. Production of virus-free plants: even if a plant is infected with a virus, the meristem (apical and axillary) is free of the virus; hence one can remove the meristem and grow it in vitro to obtain virus-free plants. Scientists have succeeded in culturing meristems of banana, sugarcane, potato and others.
Go deeper
Micropropagation keeps a variety true to type and multiplies it quickly; meristem culture additionally removes viruses.
From Class 10
From a small piece of a plant, thousands of identical baby plants can be grown in a lab and then planted in fields.
