Totipotency
டோட்டிபோடென்சி (முழுத்திறன்)
Most students confuse Totipotency with Pluripotency. In plants, a single somatic cell retains the genetic potential to form an entire organism. In humans, this is restricted to the zygote. Do not mix these up; NEET examiners exploit this distinction every year.
The idea
Totipotency is the inherent capacity of a plant cell or explant to regenerate a complete plant. This process occurs under sterile conditions using specialized nutrient media. It serves as the fundamental biological principle underpinning plant tissue culture. The explant undergoes differentiation and dedifferentiation to achieve this growth.
Why it matters
It exists because plant cells retain the genetic potential to dedifferentiate and redifferentiate into any cell type, allowing for asexual reproduction and regeneration.
NEET lens
NEET focuses on the definition and the application in tissue culture. Remember: Totipotency is a characteristic of plant cells, not animal cells. Expect questions linking this to micropropagation and the production of disease-free plants.
Clinical significance
In human biology, the loss of totipotency is absolute after the early embryonic stage. When cells lose the ability to regulate their growth and differentiation, it leads to oncogenesis. Cancer is essentially the failure of cells to maintain their specialized state, leading to uncontrolled proliferation.
Introduction
Totipotency is the capacity of a cell or explant to generate a whole plant. It is the basis of plant tissue culture.
Core concept
In tissue culture, any part of a plant (explant) is taken out and grown in a test tube under sterile conditions in special nutrient media. The nutrient medium must provide a carbon source such as sucrose, inorganic salts, vitamins, amino acids and growth regulators like auxins and cytokinins. By these methods, it is possible to achieve propagation of a large number of plants in very short durations — micropropagation. Each of these plants is genetically identical to the original plant from which it was grown, i.e. they are somaclones. Many important food plants like tomato, banana and apple have been produced on a commercial scale using this method.
Go deeper
Totipotency shows that a single differentiated plant cell still contains all the genetic information needed to form a complete plant.
From Class 10
Even a tiny piece of a plant, grown in the right nutrient jelly, can grow into a whole new plant.
