(Taxa)

Taxa

Introduction

When Linnaeus built his system of classification, he did not just name organisms — he created a language of groupings. Each level of that system is a formally recognised unit: a taxon. Taken together, the collection of these units — from species all the way up to kingdom — are the taxa. Understanding taxa is understanding the grammar of biological classification.

Core concept

Taxa (singular: taxon) are the named units at each level of the taxonomic hierarchy. Every organism belongs to one taxon at each rank — one species, one genus, one family, one order, one class, one phylum, one kingdom. Each taxon is defined by a set of shared characteristics. As you move up the hierarchy, the taxa become more inclusive (contain more organisms) but are defined by fewer shared characters. As you move down, taxa are more exclusive but defined by more shared characters.Example: Panthera leo (African lion) belongs to:Species: leo · Genus: Panthera · Family: Felidae · Order: Carnivora · Class: Mammalia · Phylum: Chordata · Kingdom: Animalia

Go deeper

The practical significance of taxa is that placing an organism in a taxon is a hypothesis about its evolutionary relationships — not just a label. When new evidence (molecular, anatomical, behavioural) changes our understanding of those relationships, organisms get moved to different taxa. This is why classification is a living science, not a fixed catalogue.

From Class 10

In Class 10, you worked with kingdoms and phyla as categories of life. You placed organisms into them without a word for what those categories were. Taxa is simply the plural of taxon — and a taxon, as you now know, is any named unit of classification. In Class 11, the concept of taxa helps you think about the hierarchy as a system of nested groups, each one a formally recognised unit.
