(Genus)

Genus

Introduction

When you look at a lion and a tiger, you see two very different animals. But look more carefully — the skull structure, the dental formula, the retractile claws, the body plan — and a deeper similarity emerges. Both belong to the genus Panthera. A genus is where species that are clearly distinct but unmistakably related come to share an address in the taxonomic system.

Core concept

A genus (plural: genera) is a taxonomic rank above species and below family. It groups species that share a close evolutionary relationship and a set of common characteristics.Key points:A genus contains one or more speciesThe genus name is the first word in the binomial name — always capitalised, always italicisedSpecies in the same genus share more characters with each other than with species in other generaExamples of genera and their species:Panthera: lion (P. leo), tiger (P. tigris), leopard (P. pardus)Solanum: potato (S. tuberosum), brinjal (S. melongena), tomato (S. lycopersicum)

Go deeper

A genus with only one species is called monotypic. A genus with many species is called polytypic. NEET does not typically test these terms, but they appear in some textbook editions. The practical NEET question on genus usually involves identifying which organisms belong to the same genus from their scientific names — which requires reading the first word of the binomial and recognising that the same first word means the same genus.

From Class 10

In Class 10, you used genus names without examining them — Panthera for lions and tigers, Solanum for potato and brinjal. In Class 11, you understand what that shared genus name actually means: these organisms are related closely enough to be placed in the same group just above species level.
