(Species)
Species
Introduction
In 1758, Carl Linnaeus gave every known organism a two-part name. It was a neat solution to a chaotic problem. But it left a deeper question unanswered: what is a species, really? Two centuries later, biologists are still arguing. The species concept is one of the most debated ideas in all of biology — not because scientists are confused, but because nature itself refuses to fit neatly into boxes.
Core concept
A species is the fundamental unit of classification. It is the lowest and most specific level in the taxonomic hierarchy. Members of the same species share the same gene pool, can interbreed naturally, and produce fertile offspring. This definition — known as the Biological Species Concept (Ernst Mayr, 1942) — is the one most relevant to NEET. It has two key conditions: natural interbreeding, and fertile offspring. A mule is produced by a horse and a donkey — two different species — and is sterile. That sterility is the signal that a species boundary has been crossed. In the hierarchy of classification, species sits below genus. The full sequence from broadest to most specific is: Kingdom → Phylum → Class → Order → Family → Genus → Species.
Go deeper
The biological species concept breaks down in several important cases that NEET occasionally tests. Asexually reproducing organisms — bacteria, many fungi, some plants — do not interbreed at all, yet we still call them species. Fossils cannot interbreed with anything. And some organisms that are clearly different species (horses and donkeys) can still produce offspring — just sterile ones. For NEET purposes, what matters is this: species is the lowest taxon, members share the most characteristics with each other, and the biological species concept defines species by reproductive isolation. Know these three things cold.
From Class 10
In Class 10, you learned that organisms are classified into groups based on shared features. You may recall that human beings belong to the species Homo sapiens — two words, always italicised. You probably took that for granted. In Class 11, we ask the harder question: what actually makes two organisms the same species? The answer is less obvious than it seems.
