Binomial Nomenclature

Introduction

Before Linnaeus, a mango might be called Mangifera foliis lanceolatis in one book and something entirely different in another. Botanists spent more time decoding names than studying plants. In 1753, Linnaeus published Species Plantarum and introduced a radical simplification: every species gets exactly two names. No more, no less. The system is still in use today, unchanged in its logic, because it solved the problem perfectly.

Core concept

Binomial nomenclature is the system of naming organisms using two words — the genus name and the species epithet. It was introduced by Carolus Linnaeus and is governed by internationally accepted codes of nomenclature. The rules NEET tests most frequently:The name must be in Latin (or Latinised)The genus name begins with a capital letter; the species epithet is entirely lowercaseThe full name is italicised when printed, or underlined when handwrittenThe name of the author who first described the species is sometimes written after the name (not italicised): Mangifera indica Linn.Examples: Homo sapiens (human), Mangifera indica (mango), Panthera leo (lion), Solanum tuberosum (potato).

Go deeper

The genus name can be abbreviated after its first mention — M. indica instead of Mangifera indica. This is standard scientific practice but not something NEET typically tests. What NEET does test: the author name convention, the capitalisation rule (genus upper, species lower), and the correct way to write the name by hand (underlined, not italicised). These feel like minor details. They are not — they are the difference between a correct answer and a wrong one.

From Class 10

In Class 10, you wrote Homo sapiens for humans and Mangifera indica for mango. You followed the rules without being told what they were. In Class 11, you learn the rules themselves — who made them, why they exist, and what each part of the name actually means.
