(Kingdom)
Kingdom
Introduction
For most of human history, life was divided into two kingdoms: plants and animals. Anything that moved was an animal; anything that did not was a plant. Fungi were plants. Bacteria were plants. Even algae were plants. It was a tidy system with one serious flaw: it was wrong. The drive to fix it took two centuries and ended with R.H. Whittaker s five-kingdom classification in 1969 — which itself has since been revised.
Core concept
Kingdom is the highest (most inclusive) rank in the traditional taxonomic hierarchy. It groups all organisms that share the most fundamental biological characteristics. The five kingdoms proposed by R.H. Whittaker (1969):Monera — prokaryotes (bacteria, cyanobacteria); no nuclear membraneProtista — unicellular eukaryotes (Amoeba, Paramecium, algae)Fungi — heterotrophic, absorptive nutrition; cell walls of chitinPlantae — autotrophic, photosynthetic; cell walls of celluloseAnimalia — heterotrophic, ingestive nutrition; no cell wallThe criteria Whittaker used: cell structure (prokaryote/eukaryote), body organisation (unicellular/multicellular), mode of nutrition, and mode of reproduction.
Go deeper
Whittaker s five-kingdom system was a major advance but has limitations. Protista is a dumping ground for diverse unicellular eukaryotes with no close evolutionary relationship to each other. Modern classification uses a three-domain system (Archaea, Bacteria, Eukarya) based on molecular data. NEET still tests the five-kingdom system, so know it — but know that it has been superseded. The two-kingdom system that preceded Whittaker s divided all life into Plantae and Animalia. Its failure to account for bacteria, fungi, and unicellular organisms was the reason the five-kingdom system was proposed.
From Class 10
In Class 10, you studied the five kingdoms — Monera, Protista, Fungi, Plantae, Animalia. You placed organisms into them based on whether they had a nucleus, how they got their food, and whether they were single-celled or multicellular. In Class 11, you revisit these kingdoms in far greater depth, and you also understand why the five-kingdom system was proposed and what it replaced.
