Identification
Introduction
Before you can name an organism, you have to know what it is. This seems obvious. But in practice, identification — the determination of the correct name for an unknown organism — is the first and most fundamental step in all of taxonomy. Without accurate identification, classification is built on sand. A misidentified organism placed in the wrong taxon corrupts the entire system around it.
Core concept
Identification is the process of determining the correct name and taxonomic position of an organism. It is one of the three pillars of taxonomy (alongside nomenclature and classification).Tools used for identification:Taxonomic keys — dichotomous keys that present paired contrasting statements to progressively narrow down identificationMonographs — comprehensive taxonomic accounts of a particular groupFlora and Fauna — published catalogues of plants (flora) and animals (fauna) of a regionHerbaria — collections of preserved, pressed plant specimens used as referenceMuseums — collections of preserved animal specimensBotanical gardens and zoological parks — living collections used for identification and study
Go deeper
The dichotomous key is the most frequently tested identification tool in NEET. It works by presenting two mutually exclusive options at each step, progressively narrowing the possibilities until the organism is identified. NEET sometimes presents a simple key and asks you to use it — not just define it.A herbarium is not just a collection — it is a scientific archive. Type specimens (the original specimens from which a species was first described) are housed in herbaria and are legally the reference standard for that species name.
From Class 10
In Class 10, you identified organisms by their visible features — leaf shape, body symmetry, presence of a backbone. That observational process is the everyday form of identification. In Class 11, identification becomes a formal discipline with tools and methods: keys, herbaria, museums, and monographs.
