Pollination Mechanisms
Introduction
Pollination is the transfer of pollen from the anther to the stigma of the same or different flower. Mechanisms include abiotic (wind — anemophily, water — hydrophily) and biotic (insects — entomophily, birds — ornithophily, bats — chiropterophily) pollination.
Core concept
Anemophily (wind): Light, non-sticky pollen. Large quantities produced. Feathery stigmas to trap pollen. No colour/nectar/scent. Examples: wheat, maize, grasses, Parthenium. Entomophily (insects): Colourful, scented flowers. Nectar as reward. Sticky/spiny pollen (pollenkitt coating). Specialised flower shapes (orchids mimic female insects — pseudocopulation). Examples: most flowering plants. Ornithophily (birds): Large, colourful, tubular, no scent (birds have poor smell). Copious dilute nectar. Sturdy flowers. Example: Bignonia, Strelitzia. Hydrophily (water): Fully aquatic (Vallisneria) or surface-floating pollen (Zostera). Very uncommon. Zoophily: animal-pollinated (bats, mammals).
Go deeper
Vallisneria (tape grass) — fascinating hydrophily: female flowers released to water surface on long stalks. Male flowers float freely. Male flower positions near female → pollen transferred at surface. Not truly underwater pollination (still surface phenomenon). True underwater: Zostera (sea grass) — pollen is thread-like and neutrally buoyant.
From Class 10
Pollen must travel from the anther to the stigma for fertilization to occur. Different plants use different agents — wind, water, insects, birds — to carry pollen. These are pollination mechanisms.
