Microsporogenesis
Introduction
Microsporogenesis is the process of formation of microspores (pollen grains) from microspore mother cells (MMC) in the anther through meiosis, followed by microgametogenesis (development of male gametophyte within the microspore).
Core concept
Location: anther locules (pollen sacs). Steps: (1) Anther develops 4 pollen sacs (microsporangia). (2) MMC (2n, diploid) in each sac undergoes meiosis → 4 haploid microspores (tetrad). (3) Microspores separate (in most plants). (4) Each microspore develops into pollen grain. Anther wall layers (outside to inside): Epidermis. Endothecium (hygroscopic, helps anther dehiscence). Middle layers (2-3, nutritive). Tapetum (innermost — most important): nourishes developing microspores, secretes sporopollenin, produces ubisch bodies, contributes to exine formation. Tapetum is the nutritive tissue of anther.
Go deeper
Tapetum role: secretory type (releases nutrients into locule) or plasmodial/amoeboid type (tapetal cells invade and absorb nutrients). Provides: precursors for sporopollenin (exine). Callase (dissolves callose wall around tetrad → releases individual microspores). Pollenkitt (oily coating on pollen in entomophilous plants).
From Class 10
Before a pollen grain can fertilize an egg, it must be formed. The process of pollen grain formation from the microspore mother cell is called microsporogenesis.
