Test Cross
இதை back cross-உடன் குழப்பிக் கொள்ளாதீர்கள்; அனைத்து test cross-களும் back cross-கள், ஆனால் அனைத்து back cross-களும் test cross-கள் அல்ல.
Introduction
A test cross is a cross between an individual showing a dominant phenotype (unknown genotype — TT or Tt) and a homozygous recessive individual (tt) to determine the unknown genotype by analyzing offspring ratios.
Core concept
Purpose: Determine whether a dominant phenotype individual is TT or Tt. Method: Cross unknown dominant (T_) with homozygous recessive (tt). Results interpretation: If unknown is TT: TT × tt → all Tt (100% dominant) → all offspring dominant phenotype. If unknown is Tt: Tt × tt → 1 Tt : 1 tt = 50% dominant : 50% recessive. So: All offspring dominant → parent was homozygous (TT). Half dominant, half recessive → parent was heterozygous (Tt). Back cross: crossing F1 with one of the original parents. Test cross is a specific type of back cross (cross with recessive parent). Used in: plant breeding (identify pure-breeding lines), animal breeding, gene mapping, establishing carrier status.
Go deeper
Test cross as a breeding tool: breeders use test crosses to identify which individuals are homozygous for desired traits (e.g., disease resistance, high yield). A seemingly dominant (resistant) plant crossed with a known susceptible (rr) → if any offspring are susceptible → parent was Rr (carrier). Only if ALL offspring are resistant → parent was RR (true-breeding). This is essential for developing stable true-breeding varieties.
From Class 10
When an organism shows a dominant trait, it may be homozygous (TT) or heterozygous (Tt). A test cross reveals which by crossing it with a homozygous recessive individual.
