Genotype and Phenotype

Introduction
Genotype refers to the genetic constitution of an organism (the specific alleles present), while phenotype refers to the observable physical, biochemical, or physiological characteristics of an organism that result from the interaction of genotype with the environment.
Core concept
Genotype: the alleles present at one or more loci (e.g., TT, Tt, tt). Represented by allele notation. Homozygous: two identical alleles (TT or tt). Heterozygous: two different alleles (Tt). Phenotype: the expressed, observable trait (e.g., tall or short). Results from: genotype + environment + gene-environment interactions. Same genotype → different phenotypes in different environments (norm of reaction). Different genotypes → same phenotype (e.g., TT and Tt both tall). Genotype-phenotype relationship: dominant allele: expressed in both homozygous (TT) and heterozygous (Tt) → same phenotype. Recessive allele: expressed only in homozygous recessive (tt). Example: ABO blood groups: IAIA and IAi → same phenotype (Group A) but different genotypes. Genotypic ratio (F2 monohybrid): 1:2:1. Phenotypic ratio (F2 monohybrid): 3:1.
Go deeper
Penetrance and expressivity: Penetrance: proportion of individuals with a given genotype who show the expected phenotype (some dominant alleles show incomplete penetrance — e.g., 80% penetrance = 80% of people with allele show trait). Expressivity: degree to which a trait is expressed in individuals who do express it (variable expressivity — same genotype, different severity). These concepts explain why pedigrees sometimes show 'skipped' generations even for dominant traits.
From Class 10
Your genotype is your genetic makeup (the alleles you carry), while your phenotype is your observable appearance or traits. A tall plant may be TT or Tt (same phenotype, different genotype).
