Rhodophyceae Features
Introduction
At 270 metres below the ocean's surface — deeper than any plant can survive — a species of red alga was discovered still photosynthesising. Red algae can do this because their pigments absorb the short blue wavelengths that penetrate deepest into water. This is an evolutionary adaptation refined over hundreds of millions of years. Red algae are among the oldest complex eukaryotes.
Core concept
Rhodophyceae (red algae):Pigments: chlorophyll a, chlorophyll d, phycoerythrin (red, dominant) + phycocyanin (blue)Cell wall: cellulose + agar or carrageenanFood reserve: floridean starchHabitat: marine; found at greater depths than other algaeFlagella: absentExamples: Polysiphonia, Porphyra, Gracilaria, GelidiumCommercial use: agar (from Gelidium and Gracilaria) — microbiology culture medium, food setting agent, pharmaceutical capsules.
Go deeper
Phycoerythrin absorbs blue and green light (deepest-penetrating in water) and transfers energy to chlorophyll. This is why red algae live at greater depths than green or brown algae.Porphyra (nori) is the red alga used in sushi wrapping. Agar from red algae is the most tested applied fact in the entire algae chapter.
From Class 10
In Class 10, you may have seen red algae as pink or crimson crusts coating coral reef surfaces. In Class 11, these are Rhodophyceae — with specific pigments that allow photosynthesis at depths where light is scarce and where no plant can survive.
