Chlorophyceae Features
Introduction
Green algae are the ancestors of land plants. They share chlorophyll a and b with plants, store food as starch, and have cellulose cell walls. When the first plants colonised land over 450 million years ago, they were almost certainly derived from a freshwater green alga. In studying Chlorophyceae, you are studying the origin of the plant kingdom.
Core concept
Chlorophyceae (green algae):Pigments: chlorophyll a and chlorophyll bColour: grass greenCell wall: cellulose (inner) + pectose (outer)Food reserve: starchHabitat: freshwater (mostly), some marine and terrestrialFlagella: equal, apical (2–8 flagella in unicellular forms)Pyrenoid: protein body in chloroplast associated with starch synthesisExamples: Chlamydomonas (unicellular, flagellate), Volvox (colonial), Ulva (sea lettuce, marine), Spirogyra (freshwater filamentous), Chlorella (food supplement)
Go deeper
Volvox is colonial — individual cells embedded in gelatinous matrix connected by cytoplasmic strands. It shows the beginning of cellular specialisation: somatic (vegetative) and reproductive cells. Tested as a colonial organism and transitional form between unicellular and multicellular life.
From Class 10
In Class 10, you encountered green algae as simple aquatic plants. In Class 11, you study Chlorophyceae formally — pigments, cell wall, food reserve, habitat, reproduction — because NEET tests each directly.
