Plasticity

Introduction

Plasticity (developmental plasticity) is the ability of plants to alter their morphology and physiology in response to environmental conditions, arising from the same genotype expressing different phenotypes.

Core concept

Classic example: Ranunculus aquatilis (water buttercup) — leaves above water are broad and lobed (typical leaf morphology); leaves submerged underwater are thin and dissected (feathery). Same plant, same DNA, different leaf shapes. Other examples: Sun vs shade leaves on the same plant — sun leaves smaller, thicker, more layers; shade leaves larger, thinner. Heterophylly = different leaf forms on the same plant. Plasticity allows plants to optimize for local conditions.

Go deeper

Molecular basis: plasticity = differential gene expression in response to environmental signals (light quality, submergence, temperature). The same genetic 'program' is executed differently. NOT the same as genetic variation (which is different DNA) — plasticity is different phenotype from same DNA.

From Class 10

The same plant species can look very different depending on where it grows — shallow water vs deep water, sun vs shade. This flexibility in plant form is called plasticity.
