Phases of Growth

Introduction

Plant growth shows a characteristic sigmoidal (S-shaped) growth curve with three phases: lag phase (slow initial growth), log/exponential phase (rapid growth), and stationary phase (growth slows and ceases as cells mature and differentiate).

Core concept

Three phases: (1) Lag phase: slow initial growth. Cells enlarging, metabolic preparation. Few divisions. (2) Log/exponential phase: rapid growth. Maximum cell division rate. Maximum elongation. Exponential increase in size. (3) Stationary phase: growth rate declines. Cells reach mature size. Differentiation completes. Senescence begins. Overall curve = sigmoid (S-shaped). This applies to individual organs (leaves, fruits) and whole plants. Time frame varies: leaf = days-weeks, tree = years-decades.

Go deeper

Measuring growth: freshweight, dryweight, leaf area, number of cells, height. Each measure shows the S-curve. Growth rate (dW/dt) peaks during log phase. Absolute growth rate (AGR) = increase per unit time. Relative growth rate (RGR) = increase per unit size per unit time (RGR = AGR/W). Young seedlings have high RGR even though AGR is low.

From Class 10

Growth doesn't happen at a constant rate. A seedling grows slowly at first, then rapidly, then levels off. These distinct periods are the phases of growth.
