Plant Defense Mechanisms
Introduction
Plants cannot run away from herbivores, so they have evolved morphological and chemical defences against them.
Core concept
Morphological: thorns in Acacia and cactus are the most common morphological means of defence. Chemical: many plants produce and store chemicals that make the herbivore sick when eaten, inhibit feeding or digestion, disrupt its reproduction or even kill it — e.g. the weed Calotropis, growing in abandoned fields, produces highly poisonous cardiac glycosides, and that is why you never see any cattle or goats browsing on this plant. A wide variety of chemical substances that we extract from plants on a commercial scale (nicotine, caffeine, quinine, strychnine, opium, etc.) are produced by them actually as defences against grazers and browsers.
Go deeper
Many plant-derived drugs and stimulants that humans use are, in origin, the plant's chemical defence against herbivores.
From Class 10
Plants protect themselves with thorns or with bitter, poisonous chemicals so animals don't eat them.
