Age Pyramids

Introduction

An age pyramid shows the age distribution of a population — the proportion of individuals in pre-reproductive, reproductive and post-reproductive age groups.

Core concept

Shapes (NCERT): expanding — triangular; a large number of pre-reproductive individuals (base is broad) → growing population; stable — bell-shaped; pre-reproductive and reproductive individuals are nearly equal → stable population; declining — urn-shaped; fewer pre-reproductive than reproductive individuals → declining population. For human populations, age pyramids generally show the age distribution of males and females in a combined diagram.

Go deeper

The base of the pyramid (young individuals) predicts the future: a wide base means many future parents, so the population will grow.

From Class 10

A country with many children and fewer old people is growing; one with fewer children is shrinking. An age pyramid shows this at a glance.
