Logistic Growth
Introduction
No population in nature has unlimited resources. When resources become limiting, growth slows and the population levels off at the carrying capacity — logistic growth.
Core concept
A population growing in a habitat with limited resources shows an initial lag phase, followed by phases of acceleration and deceleration, and finally an asymptote, when the population density reaches the carrying capacity (K). A plot of N against time gives a sigmoid (S-shaped) curve. This is the Verhulst-Pearl logistic growth, described by dN/dt = rN × (K − N)/K, where N = population density at time t, r = intrinsic rate of natural increase and K = carrying capacity. Since resources for growth for most animal populations are finite and become limiting sooner or later, the logistic growth model is considered a more realistic one.
Go deeper
The term (K − N)/K is the 'environmental resistance' that slows growth as N approaches K. When N = K, growth stops (dN/dt = 0).
From Class 10
A school canteen can feed only so many students. Once it is full, no more can be served — populations also stop growing when resources run out.
