Exponential Growth
Introduction
When resources in a habitat are unlimited, each species can realise its fullest innate potential to grow in number. The population then grows exponentially (geometrically).
Core concept
If population size is N, birth rate b and death rate d, then dN/dt = (b − d) × N; let (b − d) = r, so dN/dt = rN. The integral form is Nt = N0 e^rt, where Nt = population density after time t, N0 = population density at time zero, r = intrinsic rate of natural increase, and e = the base of natural logarithms (2.71828). Plotting N against time gives a J-shaped curve. The r value is an important parameter for assessing the impact of biotic or abiotic factors on population growth: for the Norway rat r = 0.015; for the flour beetle r = 0.12; in 1981, r for the human population in India was 0.0205.
Go deeper
Any species growing exponentially under unlimited resource conditions can reach enormous densities in a short time — Darwin showed how even a slow-growing animal like the elephant could do so in the absence of checks.
From Class 10
If every couple of rabbits had many babies and none died, the number of rabbits would shoot up very fast — that is exponential growth.
