Regions of Root

Introduction

The root has distinct regions from tip to base: root cap, meristematic zone, elongation zone, and maturation zone — each serving a different function.

Core concept

Root cap: protective thimble-shaped structure at tip, secretes mucilage. Meristematic zone: active cell division. Elongation zone: cells elongate, pushing root forward. Maturation zone: cells differentiate, root hairs develop here for absorption. Root hairs = extensions of epiblema cells.

Go deeper

Root cap cells are continuously replaced by the apical meristem as old cells are sloughed off. The mucilage lubricates the root tip as it pushes through soil. Root hairs dramatically increase surface area — a rye plant has ~14 billion root hairs.

From Class 10

You know roots absorb water and anchor plants. Roots have different zones along their length, each with a specific function.
