Androecium Structure
Introduction
The androecium is the male whorl of a flower, consisting of stamens. Each stamen has a filament (stalk) and anther (pollen-producing head).
Core concept
Anther structure: typically bilobed, each lobe with 2 pollen sacs (microsporangia) = dithecous. Monothecous = 1 lobe (Malvaceae). Fusion types: Free (polyandrous), Monadelphous (all filaments fused — Malvaceae), Diadelphous (2 bundles — pea: 9+1), Polyadelphous (multiple bundles — Citrus). Anther attachment: basifixed, dorsifixed, versatile.
Go deeper
Diadelphous condition in pea (9+1): 9 stamens are fused, 1 is free. This is important for Fabaceae identification. The free stamen allows access for pollinators.
From Class 10
Stamens are the male reproductive parts of a flower. Their collective structure is called the androecium.
