Anaerobic Sludge Digesters

Introduction

Anaerobic sludge digesters are large tanks where the major part of the activated sludge from sewage treatment is digested by anaerobic bacteria.

Core concept

In the digester, other kinds of bacteria, which grow anaerobically, digest the bacteria and fungi in the sludge. During this digestion, bacteria produce a mixture of gases such as methane, hydrogen sulphide and carbon dioxide. These gases form biogas and can be used as a source of energy because it is inflammable. The effluent from the secondary treatment plant is generally released into natural water bodies like rivers and streams.

Go deeper

This step turns waste into fuel: the same methanogenic bacteria that live in cow dung work in sewage sludge digesters.

From Class 10

Sludge from sewage plants is put into closed tanks where bacteria without oxygen break it down and give off fuel gas.
