Trophic Levels

Introduction

Each organism occupies a specific place in a food chain, called its trophic level, based on the source of its nutrition or food.

Core concept

Producers (plants) belong to the first trophic level; herbivores (primary consumers) to the second; carnivores (secondary consumers) to the third; and top carnivores (tertiary consumers) to the fourth. The number of trophic levels in the grazing food chain is restricted as the transfer of energy follows the 10 per cent law — only 10 per cent of the energy is transferred to each trophic level from the lower trophic level. Each trophic level has a certain mass of living material at a particular time, called the standing crop.

Go deeper

One species can occupy more than one trophic level at the same time in a food web, depending on what it eats — e.g. sparrow eating seeds (primary consumer) and insects (secondary consumer).

From Class 10

Grass is eaten by a goat, and the goat by a lion. Grass, goat and lion are at different steps (levels) of the food chain.
