GPP and NPP

Introduction

Gross primary productivity (GPP) is the rate of production of organic matter during photosynthesis; net primary productivity (NPP) is what remains after the plants' own respiration losses.

Core concept

GPP − R = NPP, where R = respiration losses. A considerable amount of GPP is utilised by plants in respiration. Net primary productivity is the available biomass for the consumption to heterotrophs (herbivores and decomposers). Secondary productivity is defined as the rate of formation of new organic matter by consumers. Primary productivity depends on the plant species inhabiting a particular area, a variety of environmental factors, availability of nutrients and photosynthetic capacity of plants, so it varies in different types of ecosystems. The annual net primary productivity of the whole biosphere is approximately 170 billion tons (dry weight) of organic matter; despite occupying about 70 per cent of the surface, the productivity of the oceans is only 55 billion tons.

Go deeper

Productivity is a rate (amount per area per time, e.g. g−2 yr−1 or kcal m−2 yr−1), whereas standing crop is the amount present at one point in time.

From Class 10

Plants make food (GPP) but use part of it themselves to live (R). What's left (NPP) is what animals can eat.
