Ecosystem Stratification
Introduction
Stratification is the vertical distribution of different species occupying different levels in an ecosystem.
Core concept
Example (NCERT): in a forest, trees occupy the top vertical strata or layer, shrubs the second, and herbs and grasses occupy the bottom layers. Stratification is one of the two important structural features of an ecosystem, along with species composition. Well-defined vertical layers of plants depending on their height are best seen in tropical rain forests.
Go deeper
Stratification lets more species share the same area by using light and space at different heights.
From Class 10
In a forest, tall trees form the top layer, bushes the middle and grasses the bottom — like floors in a building.
