Ecosystem Stratification

சூழல் மண்டல அடுக்குமுறை

NCERT Class 12 · Ecosystem · 1 NEET question

Nature does not tolerate overcrowding. Stratification is the evolutionary solution to resource competition. If every species occupied the same vertical space, the ecosystem would collapse under the weight of interspecific competition.

The idea

Stratification is the vertical distribution of different species occupying different levels in an ecosystem. In a forest, trees occupy the top vertical strata, shrubs the second, and herbs or grasses the bottom layers. This vertical arrangement maximizes the utilization of available sunlight and space.

Why it matters

It allows for the maximum utilization of available resources like sunlight and space by different species in a habitat.

NEET lens

NEET focuses on the vertical order: Trees (top) > Shrubs (middle) > Herbs (bottom). Do not confuse this with 'Zonation' which refers to horizontal distribution. Remember: Stratification is vertical; Zonation is horizontal.

Clinical significance

In human anatomy, the stratified squamous epithelium mirrors this concept. Just as forest layers protect the ecosystem, these cellular strata protect the body from mechanical stress and dehydration. Failure of this stratification leads to rapid tissue erosion and infection.

Introduction

Stratification is the vertical distribution of different species occupying different levels in an ecosystem.

Core concept

Example (NCERT): in a forest, trees occupy the top vertical strata or layer, shrubs the second, and herbs and grasses occupy the bottom layers. Stratification is one of the two important structural features of an ecosystem, along with species composition. Well-defined vertical layers of plants depending on their height are best seen in tropical rain forests.

Go deeper

Stratification lets more species share the same area by using light and space at different heights.

From Class 10

In a forest, tall trees form the top layer, bushes the middle and grasses the bottom — like floors in a building.
