Bt நச்சு செயல்முறை
Bt Toxin Mechanism
Introduction
Some strains of Bacillus thuringiensis produce proteins that kill certain insects — lepidopterans (tobacco budworm, armyworm), coleopterans (beetles) and dipterans (flies, mosquitoes). Their genes are used to make Bt crops.
Core concept
Mechanism (NCERT): B. thuringiensis forms protein crystals during a particular phase of its growth; these crystals contain a toxic insecticidal protein. The Bt toxin protein exists as an inactive protoxin, but once an insect ingests it, it is converted into an active form due to the alkaline pH of the gut, which solubilises the crystals. The activated toxin binds to the surface of midgut epithelial cells and creates pores, causing cell swelling and lysis and eventually the death of the insect. The toxin is coded by a gene named cry. Proteins encoded by cryIAc and cryIIAb control cotton bollworms; cryIAb controls corn borer. Bt cotton, Bt corn, rice, tomato, potato and soyabean have been developed.
Go deeper
The toxin does not kill the bacterium because it is stored as an inactive protoxin; only the alkaline insect gut activates it.
From Class 10
Bt crops carry a bacterial gene that makes a protein poisonous to specific pests, so the plants protect themselves.
