Phylum Chordata
Introduction
A fish, a frog, a snake, a bird, and you — what do you all share? You are all chordates, members of Phylum Chordata. But this phylum also includes some humble sea-dwelling invertebrates that most people have never heard of. The key to understanding Chordata is not the backbone — it is four embryonic structures that every chordate possesses at some point in its life.
Core concept
Phylum Chordata is defined by four characters present at some stage of development: (1) a notochord — a flexible rod-like skeletal structure; (2) a dorsal hollow nerve cord — precursor to the brain and spinal cord; (3) pharyngeal gill slits — paired openings in the pharynx; and (4) a post-anal tail. Chordata is divided into three subphyla: Urochordata (tunicates — notochord only in larva; e.g. Ascidia), Cephalochordata (lancelets — notochord persists throughout life; e.g. Amphioxus/Branchiostoma), and Vertebrata (notochord replaced by vertebral column in adults). Urochordata and Cephalochordata together are called Protochordata — invertebrate chordates.
Go deeper
The dorsal hollow nerve cord of chordates contrasts sharply with the ventral solid nerve cord of arthropods and annelids — a key phylogenetic distinction. Amphioxus (Branchiostoma) is a model organism for studying chordate evolution because it retains all four chordate features throughout its life.
From Class 10
In Class 10, you learned that vertebrates have a backbone. Phylum Chordata is the phylum that contains all vertebrates — but it also contains some surprising non-vertebrate members. At NEET level, you need to know the four defining characters that unite all chordates.
