Class Mammalia
Introduction
Mammals are the most familiar vertebrates — and the most biologically sophisticated. The class that includes whales, bats, platypus, and humans is bound together not by lifestyle or habitat but by a precise set of anatomical features no other class shares. Understanding these features, and the three reproductive sub-groups within Mammalia, is essential for NEET.
Core concept
Class Mammalia is characterised by: (1) body covered with hair or fur; (2) mammary glands in females; (3) heterodont dentition — different types of teeth (incisors, canines, premolars, molars); (4) a muscular diaphragm separating thoracic and abdominal cavities; (5) warm-blooded (homoiothermous); (6) four-chambered heart; (7) internal fertilisation; (8) pinna (external ear); and (9) three middle ear bones — malleus, incus, stapes. Three sub-groups: Prototheria (egg-laying; e.g. Ornithorhynchus — platypus, Echidna), Metatheria (pouched/marsupials; e.g. Macropus — kangaroo), and Eutheria (placental; e.g. humans, whales, bats).
Go deeper
The three middle ear ossicles of mammals evolved from jaw bones — the articular and quadrate bones of ancestral reptiles became the malleus and incus. This is one of the best-documented examples of evolutionary repurposing in the fossil record. The platypus combines egg-laying (reptilian) with mammary glands and hair (mammalian), making it a key transitional example.
From Class 10
In Class 10, you knew mammals are warm-blooded and feed young with milk. At NEET level, know the full defining characters — hair, diaphragm, heterodont dentition, three ear ossicles — and the three reproductive sub-groups.
