ZIFT and IUT

ZIFT மற்றும் IUT

NCERT Class 12 · Reproductive Health · 3 NEET questions

Stop confusing ZIFT and IUT. NEET examiners love to swap the 8-blastomere threshold to test your attention to detail. If you fail to distinguish between the fallopian tube and the uterus, you lose 4 marks instantly.

The idea

ZIFT (Zygote Intra Fallopian Transfer) involves transferring a zygote or early embryo of up to 8 blastomeres into the fallopian tube. IUT (Intra Uterine Transfer) is used when the embryo has more than 8 blastomeres, which is then transferred directly into the uterus. These techniques are essential components of Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART) for infertile couples.

Why it matters

These techniques ensure the embryo is placed in the correct anatomical location for further development and implantation.

NEET lens

NEET focuses on the '8-blastomere' cutoff. Remember: ZIFT = 8 cells (Uterus). Do not confuse these with GIFT, which involves gametes, not embryos. Expect at least one matching-type question on ART techniques every year.

Clinical significance

These procedures bypass anatomical obstructions in the fallopian tubes or hormonal failures in the female reproductive tract. Failure in these transfers often results from poor endometrial receptivity or chromosomal abnormalities in the embryo. Success depends entirely on the precise timing of the transfer relative to the menstrual cycle.

Introduction

ZIFT (Zygote Intra-Fallopian Transfer) involves transferring a fertilized egg (zygote) into the fallopian tube, while IUT (Intra-Uterine Transfer) refers to transferring embryos/sperm directly into the uterine cavity — both are ART methods for achieving pregnancy.

Core concept

ZIFT: Eggs retrieved from ovary → fertilized in lab (same as IVF) → resulting zygote (fertilized egg, not yet divided) transferred to fallopian tube (not uterus). Transfer via laparoscopy → into ampulla of fallopian tube. Advantage: more 'natural' — zygote develops as it travels down tube to uterus. Disadvantage: requires laparoscopy (surgical). Requires at least one patent fallopian tube. IUT (Intra-Uterine Transfer): embryo transfer directly into uterine cavity (standard IVF-ET — embryo transfer). OR intra-uterine insemination (IUI): sperm placed directly into uterus via catheter. Note: NEET often groups: IVF + ET, GIFT, ZIFT, IUT as ART types. Key distinctions: GIFT = gametes into tube (fertilization in tube). ZIFT = zygote into tube. IVF-ET = embryo into uterus. IUI = sperm into uterus.

Go deeper

Why ZIFT fell out of favor: IVF + ET achieves similar results without laparoscopy (which carries surgical risks). ZIFT historically performed when tubes were patent and natural transport was desired. With improvements in embryo culture (blastocyst, PGT-A) and FET, standard IVF-ET is preferred. GIFT similarly declined. Now IVF/ICSI + ET = dominant ART globally.

From Class 10

ZIFT and IUT are assisted reproductive techniques where either a zygote or an embryo is placed into the fallopian tube rather than directly into the uterus.
